Papers and photographs, 1945-1949.

These papers and photographs belong to James R. Zeasman, a World War II veteran who remained with the American occupying forces in the Pacific until 1948. Papers include a letter written to Zeasman's mother that describes his hopes of promotion, the general order that temporarily promoted him to the rank of corporal, and a certificate Zeasman received for crossing the International Date Line. Several mess hall passes and military permits can be found among the collection's ephemera. The collection also contains thirty-four photographs taken during Zeasman's time in the Pacific. Photographs are set in Japan, Korea, the Philippines, and of his return voyage to the United States in 1948. One 1946 photograph features a group of United States Army troops posing in front of a crumbling edifice in Nagasaki, Japan, the target of the second atomic bomb.
